The main opposition in the BC Legislature is set to officially change its name this week.
Kamloops-North Thompson MLA and Finance Critic Peter Milobar says his party is excited about the forthcoming rebrand.
“The next time I step into the legislature, we will no longer be the BC Liberals, we will be referred to as BC United and we will be putting forward our vision for what we see for British Columbians.”
The party voted late last year to change the name to BC United.
Milobar says while they don’t know when the NDP government intends to call the vote if it is called later this year, his party will be ready — even in the six new ridings set to be created.
“Now that we actually know what the boundary lines are, it is a lot easier to start trying to finalize those nominations and candidates of various ridings so that we are ready for an election if and when it gets called.”
However, he says the BC United party isn’t going to rush to start nominating candidates, as the BC Greens have already begun doing.
“We are taking a very methodical approach, but that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been a lot of work going on in the background making ready if and when a snap election is called, we’re ready.”
Under provincial law, the NDP government has until October of next year to call an election. However, there is growing speculation a vote this fall could be on the way.
Milobar intends to run in the newly-formed Kamloops-Center riding, while Todd Stone will challenge in Kamloops-North Thompson.
