With nine points in two games, Olen Zellweger has been named WHL Player of the Week for the week ending April 23.
The Anaheim Ducks prospect, who led all WHL skaters with nine points (three goals and six assists) in two games, tied a playoff record with seven points in a game on Thursday night.
Zellweger put up two assists in the Blazers’ 3-2 win over the Portland Winterhawks in Game 3 Wednesday night, before following it up by scoring the first playoff hattrick by a WHL defenceman 14 years in Game 4 Thursday night while also adding four assists in a 10-4 blowout Blazers win.
His win makes it back-to-back weeks where a Kamloops Blazer has taken home the player of the week award after Logan Stankoven did so the previous week.
Zellweger and Stankoven lead all skaters with 21 points in eight games in the 2023 playoffs. Zellweger has seven goals and 14 assists, while Stankoven has 10 goals and 11 assists.
His 21 points is also the most by a defenceman in the WHL playoff since Bowen Byram put up 26 over four rounds in 2019 when the Vancouver Giants lost the WHL Finals to the Prince Albert Raiders in seven games.
A native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., Zellweger has put up 183 points (50 goals and 133 assists) in 180 career WHL regular season games with Everett and Kamloops. He’s also put up 30 points (nine goals and 21 assists) in 14 career playoff games.
Zellweger and the Blazers are preparing for a rematch with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the Western Conference Championship series.
Games 1 and 2 will take place in Kent, Wash. on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30. Games 3 and 4 will be at the Sandman Centre on Tuesday, May 2 and Thursday, May 4.
