The next time you fly through Kamloops Airport, keep your eyes peeled for a new welcome sign.
Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc says its Language and Culture Department collaborated with Kamloops Airport staff to create the sign that welcomes people to Secwepemcúl̓ecw, the traditional territory of the Secwépemc people.
The band says while Secwepemctsin might be difficult – like all languages – there are resources for people who want to learn the language.
The new sign comes as Tk’emlúps and Kamloops are in the midst of trying to secure the hosting rights for the 2027 North American Indigenous Games. Four delegates from the NAIG Council were in Kamloops this weekend to tour sports and cultural facilities as part of the bid process.
