The Village of Cache Creek is under a local state of emergency due to the flooding situation brought on by a late April heat wave.
It says one property on the Trans Canada Highway is under an evacuation order as of Sunday, April 30.
“The RCMP have already been in contact with the property owner,” the Village said, in a statement. “No other properties are currently under evacuation alert or order.”
The local state of emergency will remain in effect until midnight on May 6 unless it is cancelled earlier by village officials.
Village crews began installing flood protection measures along Quartz Road on Thursday, April 27, in anticipation of this increase in water levels. Quartz Road remains closed at the intersection of Highway 1 and Quartz Road, near the Cache Creek Fire Hall.
“We do ask that all residents remain at least 20 feet away from the banks of all waterways,” the statement added. “Specifically, there is no pedestrian access through Quartz Road by the Fire Hall.”
“Staff have observed numerous people going around the signage and flood mitigation systems, and in doing so are putting themselves at extreme risk. Please stay away from all of our waterways during freshet.”
The B.C. River Forecast Centre has also upgraded a high streamflow advisory for the Lower Thompson area to a flood watch. It covers Cache Creek, Criss Creek, the Deadman River, the Bonaparte River, and surrounding areas around Cache Creek and Skeetchestn.
“A strong upper ridge that brought hot temperatures across the province is breaking down. An upper low is expected to bring unsettled weather and showers today, particularly for the South Interior,” the River Forecast Centre said Sunday.
“Another period of warmer temperatures is expected next week, with well above temperatures expected.”
The River Forecast Centre has UPGRADED to a FLOOD WATCH for Lower Thompson (incl. Cache & Criss Creek, Deadman & Bonaparte Rivers & surrounding areas). The Nazko & West Road Rivers MAINTAIN a Flood Watch. More info: https://t.co/qleRNXQm5d (PDF) #BCFlood
