Kamloops Blazers defenceman Olen Zellweger has been named the WHL Player of the Month for April.
The 19-year-old led all skaters with 21 points (nine goals and 12 assists) in nine games last month, one more than teammate Logan Stankoven who won the award in April last year.
Zellweger’s month was highlighted by a seven point night on April 20 – including the first playoff hattrick by a WHL defenceman 14 years – as the Blazers swept Portland in the second round of the playoffs.
It tied the playoff record for points in a game by a defenceman, a previous held by former Blazer, Darryl Sydor.
He also scored the series-clinching overtime winner on April 6 to help the Blazers sweep their First Round series against the Vancouver Giants.
The Anaheim Ducks prospect had eight multi-point games in April and put up a league leading 62 shots on goal last month. He also posted+14 rating in April, and is second in the playoff scoring race with 24 points, one point behind Stankoven’s 25.
