Kamloops Blazers captain Logan Stankoven has been named the recipient of the Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy as WHL Humanitarian of the Year for the 2022-23 season.
The Kamloops native – who was nominated for his work with Hockey Gives Blood – is the first Blazer to win the award.
The Dallas Stars prospect helped raised $41,000 for Canadian Blood Services as part of Logan Stankoven Charity Night when the Blazers hosted the Vancouver Giants on March 11. He also helped raise another $10,000 for the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation through three separate campaigns.
“Over the years, I have had many people go out of their way to help me pursue my dreams in life, so giving back to the community has always been important,” Stankoven said, in a statement. “To Stu Middleton of Hockey Gives Blood, and the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, thank you for helping me raise money for such great causes.”
“Thank you to the City of Kamloops, Blazers fans, and all those who have donated and supported me through these great initiatives. Lastly, I would like to thank my family and the Kamloops Blazers organization. Without their support, winning this award would not be possible.”
Stank! 🏆
Congratulations @LoganStankoven and thanks for all you do for the community and #Kamloops https://t.co/eBBnueSqik— Kamloops Blazers (@blazerhockey) May 4, 2023
Stankoven edged Calder Anderson of the Brandon Wheat Kings, Beau Courtney of the Everett Silvertips, and 2019-20 winner Riley Fiddler-Schultz of the Calgary Hitmen to win the WHL Humanitarian of the Year award.
It is named in honour of former Regina Pats forward Doug Wickenheiser and it recognizes the work players do to help and enhance the community they play in.
Stankoven will be the WHL representative for the CHL Humanitarian of the Year Award. He will go up against Cam Squires of the Cape Breton Eagles and Dalyn Wakely of the North Bay Battalion.
