Logan Stankoven had a five point night as the Kamloops Blazers set a franchise record for most goals in a Memorial Cup game in a blowout 10-2 win over the Peterborough Petes Sunday afternoon.
Nine different Blazers – Ryan Michael, Fraser Minten, Ashton Ferster, Matthew Seminoff (2), Dylan Sydor, Stankoven, Jakub Demek, Connor Levis, and Ryan Hofer – found the back of the net as Kamloops improved to 1-1 at the tournament, while the Petes dropped to 0-2.
The Blazers previous franchise record for most goals in a Memorial Cup game was eight, a mark they set on three occasions – the 1986 Tiebreaker, an 8-1 win over Portland; the 1992 semi-final, an 8-3 win over Seattle; and the 1995 Final, an 8-2 win over Detroit.
The Blazers are also just the seventh team in Memorial Cup history to score at least ten goals in a game, and the first since the Erie Otters scored a record 12 times in 2017.
“I knew there was a lot more to give from myself personally [after Friday],” Stankoven said. “We were a really a focused group today and hungry to play the right way. It was nice to come out with a big win like that.”
Michael, who was inserted into the lineup over Aapo Sarell for his first game in nearly a month, opened the scoring with a point shot at 5:14. The 18-year-old’s goal capped off a strong Blazers start and sent an already electric Sandman Centre crowd into a frenzy.

Goals from Minten – on the power play – at 9:08 and Ferster at 13:18 had the Blazers up 3-0 after 20 minutes.
“I thought the guys were really focused,” Blazers’ Head Coach and GM Shaun Clouston said.
“They didn’t mess around. Right from the opening faceoff, we wanted to get in on the forecheck … and I thought the guys did a terrific job.”
Kamloops needed just 35 seconds of the second period to make it 4-0 as Seminoff completed a pretty passing play on the man advantage.
Sydor and Stankoven, both Kamloops natives, also struck in the opening 4:17 of the period to give the Blazers a commanding lead over the Ontario Hockey League champions.

Sydor’s goal at 3:01 marked the end of the night for Michael Simpson in the Peterborough net. The OHL playoff MVP, playing his second game in as many days, allowed five goals on 20 shots to take the loss.
Demek then buried a rebound on the power play at 8:17 to give the Blazers a touchdown lead.
Avery Hayes finally got the Petes on the board with a power play marker at 15:34, his second goal of the tournament, to leave the Blazers up 7-1 after two periods.
Levis made it 8-1 just 1:55 into the third, before Seminoff’s second power play goal and Hofer’s first of the tournament rounded out the scoring for the Blazers.

Quinton Pagé scored a late consolation goal for the Petes with 23 seconds left to play to make it a 10-2 game.
The celebrations inside Sandman Centre were muted after Blazers’ defenceman Kyle Masters had to be stretched off the ice with 6:56 left to play. The Minnesota Wild prospect fell backwards into the corner boards following a hit by Brennan Othmann and was down for several minutes as paramedics tended to him.
Masters was stabilized and flashed a thumbs up before he left the ice where he was loaded into a waiting ambulance.
“We’re optimistic Kyle will be okay,” Blazers Associate Coach Don Hay said on After the Buzzer.
“He’s being taken to hospital for further evaluation. The doctor said he wanted to get up on his own but they wanted to make sure on the ice.”
“[Masters] is a big part of our D core and to see him go down, it’s tough to see, but hopefully he’s in good spirits,” Stankoven added.

Ryan Hofer in the @RadioNLNews @blazerhockey post-game show talking about the Kyle Masters Hit by Brennan Othmann said ‘he would do it to any of us (speaking to Blazer bench)’. Explains why Shaun Clouston was so mad when Othmann went over, and why he didn’t play another shift.

In a subsequent statement, the Blazers’ said Masters “was fully awake and moving his extremities” when he was stretched off the ice. The severity of his injury remains unclear.

Dylan Ernst stopped 28 of 30 shots for his first career Memorial Cup win. Liam Sztuska allowed another five goals on 29 shots in 36:59 of relief work for the Petes.
Stankoven, the WHL playoff scoring leader for the past two seasons, added four assists to lead all Memorial Cup skaters with eight points in two games.
Levis, Demek, Caedan Bankier, and Olen Zellweger each had a pair of assists for the Memorial Cup hosts while Seminoff had an assist to go with his two goals.
