The much-needed rains have finally hit Kamloops after a parched Spring.
However, the rain has also brought with it thundershowers throughout much of the Southern Interior, creating issues for fire crews.
The BC Wildfire Service had two crews actioning a spot-fire which broke out late Saturday afternoon in the Lac Du Bois Grasslands.
BCWS Staff tell Radio NL they expect the fire will not grow much in size, which is less than a hectare.
It’s believed lightening was the cause.
A similar fire was also being actioned by the BC Wildfire Service west of Barriere.
That fire is also less than one hectare in size.
It comes as Kamloops and the surrounding areas were hit with between 5 to 10-millmeters of rain on Saturday afternoon.
It represents the first significant precipitation in June — a month considered critical for rain to try to keep wildfires at bay.
This comes on the heels of BC Parks shutting down a section of Wells Grey Provincial Park due to a fire there.
Murtle Lake in Wells Gray Provincial Park remains closed because of a roughly 13-square kilometer wildfire burning in the area.
BC Parks announced the closure Friday afternoon, saying the closure is in the interest of public safety.
The BC River Forecast Centre is warning of a “high risk of provincewide drought” this Summer.
