The BC Wildfire Service says there have been several new fires in the Kamloops Fire Centre after the thunderstorm that rolled through the region yesterday.
It says there were 628 lightning strikes across the area as of midnight yesterday, with several of the new fires listed as spot sized at the moment.
“There are a couple in Kamloops, couple in Merritt, believe there might have been one or two in the Lillooet zone but aside from that, sticking to those two areas,” Bibeau told Radio NL.
“We are also having the return of those hotter and drier conditions as well so there also is that potential of seeing holdover fires so once lightning has started ignition, sometimes it will not pop up right away.”
The largest fire is the 70-hectare Ross Moore Lake fire near Lac Le Jeune. It is highly visible from Kamloops even though its about 24 kilometres away from the City.
There is another fire in the area of Quilchena Creek near the Okanagan Connector that is estimated to be seven hectares in size, with ground and air crews on scene today.
Crews are also on another fire near Scuitto Creek, east of the Knutsford-Beresford area, that is estimated to be six hectares in size. A number of other fires are still estimated to be spot sized, meaning it is less than one hectare in size.
The Wildfire Service also says the Lower East Adams Lake wildfire has grown to 219 hectares in size, with the growth towards the northeast away from the roughly 100 properties that are on evacuation alert.
The Bush Creek East fire on the other side of Adams Lake remains at 310 hectares in size.
