The Kamloops SPCA says it’s now in the care of four puppies found abandoned in Barnhartvale just over a week ago.
The German Shepard/Border Collie cross pups were discovered emaciated on Monday, July 24th on a forest service road.
Daria Evans with the SPCA says they’re not sure who — or why — the puppies were left to fend on their own.
“It could be any number of things. We’re seeing people who are looking to re-home their animals because they can’t keep up with the cost of living. They can’t find pet-friendly housing.”
At the same time, Evans concedes this incident may also be connected to back-yard breeders.
“People who decided to breed their animals during the pandemic, because they were able to make quite a bit of money off of those puppies and kittens. Now, because there’s much less demand, they are finding that these animals are an expense, rather than a profit.”
Evans says they expect the four puppies — all around 3-months old — should be returned to full health and available for adoption in around a month.
Evans does note the dozen kennels run by the SPCA in the region are now completely full with both dogs and cats.
