Increased winds are expected to drastically increase fire behavior on the Lower East Adams Lake wildfire, amid the ongoing heatwave.
According to the BC Wildfire Service, Tuesday marked the hottest and driest day for the Lower East Adams Lake Wildfire, currently estimated at over 6,500 hectares.
The wildfire service expects fire behavior will remain elevated overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, August 16, as winds are forecasted to remain elevated.
“These winds will align with the orientation of the Nikwikwaia Creek, which will drastically increase fire behaviour along the east side of the fire,” said the wildfire service in an update.
“A smoke column will be very visible but should be moving away from Lee Creek given the forecasted wind direction.”
Meanwhile, wildfire crews are anticipating Thursday to be the most challenging day for fire behavior due to forecasted strong winds from the southwest. However, those winds are expected to continue pushing the fire away from Lee Creek.
The growth in fire activity has prompted the Shuswap Emergency Program to move one of its Structure Protection Units to the Gateway Lakeview Resort entrance, with the other unit staged at the Scotch Creek Lee Creek Fire Hall.
