As parts of B.C. remains on edge due to an evolving wildfire situation, Kamloops firefighters say they are preparing for a potential fire within city limits.
That’s according to Deputy Chief Ryan Cail, who says the conditions right now are some of the most extreme he’s ever seen.
“We’re very concerned. I think everybody can see the volatile situation we’re in out there. Not only is it hot and dry, but the winds exacerbate the situation we’re in right now,” Cail said Friday.
All nature parks and trails have been closed once again due to the extreme fire danger, recent weather, and current drought conditions.
“We just got to next through the next 24 to 48 hours and reengage at that time but right now its the worst we’ve seen in a very long time,”Cail added.
“There is still some apparatus with BC Wildfire and crews available, if we do need them, but they are thin. We will be stretched thin, and our biggest threat now is going to be the next fire in the city that we are preparing for.”
Cail also says KFR sent one fire engine and four firefighters to help in the fight against the McDougall Creek wildfire. Local states of emergency have been declared in Kelowna, West Kelowna, and the Westbank First Nation after the fast moving fire destroyed a significant number of properties.
“We’re in constant communication with KFR crews and the fire department and members that are there,” Cail added. “I can say this much – they’re working hard, they’re putting everything they’ve got into the fire over there and everyone that’s involved.”
In Kamloops, Cail says KFR is “healthy and ready to go” respond to emergencies as needed, noting that while at minimum there is one engine on either side of the Thompson River, current resources are “well above” that level.
“We’re sitting healthy. Our mechanics are working overtime to keep all of our trucks ready to hit the road if we need something,” Cail added.
“This weekend is going to create a whole interesting situation that we’re just getting prepared for but we’re confident that our crews are ready to handle the situation as it comes.”
