Highway 1 between Chase and Sorrento has reopened after a week-long closure due to the Bush Creek East wildfire.
Drive BC says traffic has been able to get through in both directions as of 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25.
“There is wildfire activity between Shuswap Avenue and Blind Bay Road for 19 kilometres,” a statement from DriveBC said. “No stopping will be permitted in this wildfire area.”
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says it has been monitoring wildfire risk and activity along the corridor, east of Kamloops, while also supporting evacuation orders on both sides of the highway.
“Crews are also working to clear side roads adversely affected by wildfire,” the Ministry of Transportation said.
Highway 1 between Boston Bar and Lytton in the Fraser Canyon will remain closed through the weekend. That section of the Trans-Canada has been closed since last Thursday, Aug.17, because of the Kookipi Creek fire, which crossed the highway and the Fraser River.
“The fire has burned trees on the bluffs above the highway, resulting in falling trees and boulders along the affected area, including through the Falls Creek (Jackass Mountain) highway reconstruction site,” the Ministry added, noting the temporary bridge and other construction sites have not been damaged.
“The removal of dangerous trees and rock scaling is underway along the corridor. The ministry’s maintenance contractor has begun clearing culverts through the affected area. Assessments of area side roads are also underway in order to prioritize cleanup.”
It is not clear when that section of the highway will reopen.
The Ministry of Transportation will have an update on Monday, Aug. 28, noting the reopening will depend on the weather and local fire activity.
