Further signs this year’s wildfire season in the Southern Interior is coming to its inevitable close as the BC Wildfire Service says the Bush Creek East Fire is being held at 456 sq. kilometres.
It means the massive lightning-caused wildfire is not likely to spread beyond predetermined boundaries under prevailing conditions.
“The area surrounding the Bush Creek East wildfire is an active worksite, and there is increased traffic on key routes in the area, including the Adams West Forest Service Road. the BC Wildfire Service said, in an update.
“If you are travelling in the area, please slow down, use radios to call your kilometres where required, and stay alert.”
The change in status comes as both the Thompson-Nicola Regional District and the Columbia-Shuswap Regional District have rescinded evacuation alerts in the Shuswap and the Adams Lake area.
The TNRD has given the all clear to 124 properties east and west of Adams Lake, as well as in Turtle Valley and along Loakin-Bear Creek Road.
“Should conditions change, an Evacuation Alert and/or Evacuation Order will be reinstated as necessary,” the TNRD said.
Similar the CSRD has rescinded evacuation alerts for all properties in Lee Creek, Scotch Creek, Celista, Magna Bay, Sorrento, Notch Hill, as well as the Lower East Adams Lake area and properties around Tsútswecw Provincial Park.
At least 176 structures within the CSRD were destroyed by the Bush Creek East Fire with another 50 that were partially damaged.
Another 85 structures on Skwla̓x te Secwepemcúl’ecw land were also destroyed by the blaze, while the Thompson-Nicola Regional District said there were nine properties in the southern Adams Lake area that had some kind of structural impacts.
As it stands, there are 190 properties in the CSRD that remain on an evacuation order. The CSRD says those properties were severely impacted by the fire and have sustained structure loss.
Large swaths of the Squilax Nation also remain under an evacuation order.
