UPDATE 5:30 p.m. – The Transportation Safety Board is following up on reports after what is believed to the decades old wreckage of a plane was found north of Kamloops earlier this month.
It says in a statement that its investigators have been in contact with the RCMP and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria.
A Transport Canada site that tracks civil aviation reports says a hunter reached out to the Kamloops Flight Information Centre after finding the aircraft in a remote area near Kamloops.
“The Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded and verified wreckage was at least 20 to 25 years old,” the notice said. “No registration or identifying marks visible.”
The coordinates on the Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System website were for a location southeast of Scuitto Lake, though it came with a disclaimer that those reports contain preliminary, unconfirmed data which can be subject to change.
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy though says it was police in Barriere who were made aware of the discovery near Knouff and Community Lake on Nov. 3.
“A hunter in the area observed a piece of an airplane in the distance,” Grandy said in an email statement.
“Upon closer inspection, the hunter observed it to be an airplane with no motor, wings, doors, seats, or propeller. Only the fuselage remained. Additionally, no registration numbers were attached.”
Grandy also confirmed that the fuselage was likely sitting in the area for over two decades.
“The RCMP’s investigation confirmed no missing airplanes have been reported,” Grandy added. “No one was located within.”
It is not clear what aircraft was involved or what happened to the pilot and any other occupants who were on board.
