Nathan Behm and Shea Van Olm scored a pair of goals each as the Kamloops Blazers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-3 come from behind win over the Vancouver Giants Friday night.
It was the perfect start to the post-Fraser Minten era as the win came just hours after the Blazers dealt their captain to the Saskatoon Blades in a blockbuster trade.
Newcomer Jordan Keller added an assist while Harrison Brunicke finished with a goal and two assists as the Blazers erased a 3-1 deficit on the night with five unanswered goals.
“Yeah, obviously some tough news there, also didn’t really get a chance to say goodbye [to Fraser], but I mean, we all took it to heart and put it out on the ice there tonight and had a great game,” Brunicke said post-game.
Brunicke got the Blazers on the board at 6:18 of the first with a power play marker but the Giants found a way back. Goals from Cameron Schmidt, Kyren Gronick, and Tyler Thorpe had the visitors up 3-1 after 20 minutes.
Goals from Van Olm and Behm in the first seven minutes of the second tied the game at 3-3, before 16-year-old Andrew Thomson scored what turned out to be the game winner late in the period.

Thomson’s breakaway goal capped a wild sequence for the Blazers that saw goaltender Dylan Ernst make what could end up being the WHL’s save of the year.

Behm and an empty netter from Van Olm added to the Blazers lead in the third to give Kamloops their sixth win of the season.

“Thought it was a good opportunity for everyone to push and step up a little bit,” Behm said. “I thought Jordan did a great job stepping in too. It was a long day of travel for him, so I thought everybody did a good job.”
Keller, the 18-year-old son of former Blazer Aaron Keller, made the trip up from Seattle Friday as the Blades are in the midst of their US Division road trip.
“Yeah, it obviously a crazy day but it was a lot of fun playing in front of the hometown crowd,” Keller said post-game. “It was a lot of fun. You know big times, big moments, that’s when you want to play, so yeah, it was awesome.”
Keller becomes the fourth second generation Blazer joining Mike and Matt Needham, Dave and Nick Chyzowski, and Darryl and Dylan Sydor.
“It’s crazy. I wore that jersey when I was little, so its great to put it back on again,” Keller said.
Ernst made 20 saves on 23 shots to earn the win in net Friday, while Brett Mirwald stopped 33 of 38 in a losing effort.
The win takes the Blazers to 6-13-2-2 this season, while the Giants drop to 9-13-2-0.
The Blazers will complete a three-game homestand Saturday with a 6 p.m. puck drop against the Everett Silvertips at Sandman Centre.
