There will be a precautionary closure of the Trans-Canada Highway through the Fraser Canyon tonight because of heavy rainfall and snow in the forecast.
The highway will be closed between Boothroyd and Siska (approximately nine kilometres south of Lytton) from 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, until about 9 a.m. tomorrow, Dec. 5.
The province says the highway will open after it can conduct as assessment Tuesday.
“The ministry’s geotechnical experts have recommended this closure as a precaution in case heavy precipitation overwhelms the area affected by this summer’s Kookipi Creek wildfire,” the province said, in a statement.
It is not the first closure on Highway 1 due to the risk of landslides this summer.
Drivers heading between the Lower Mainland and the BC Interior are being told to use the Coquihalla or Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton. They are being told to watch for winter driving conditions on both highways – including snow and rain.
“Checkpoints will be set up on Highway 1 just outside of Hope and Lytton to advise motorists about the detour routes and assist local traffic,” the province added.
People are being told ensure their vehicle has the appropriate tires, and that they’re prepared for delays by carrying food, water and blankets.
“Drivers can assist maintenance crews by moving over safely when they see a vehicle with an amber light approaching,” the province added. “This will allow maintenance crews to clear the snow and improve road conditions to reduce hazards, and help motorists get safely to their destinations.”
