Monte Creek native Kolby Hay made 35 saves to lead the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 3-1 win over his hometown Kamloops Blazers Wednesday night.
The 19-year-old Hay – who was named first star on the night – turned aside a Connor Levis penalty shot in the third period at Sandman Centre to help Edmonton extend its point streak to six games.
Hay’s shutout bid was ended with 89 seconds left to play after Kamloops native Jordan Keller scored a power play goal from a sharp angle.
Goals from Landon Hanson and newly acquired Gracyn Sawchyn, the former Seattle Thunderbird, gave the Oil Kings a 2-0 lead after the first period.
Sawchyn scored his second of the night early in the third, before Keller’s goal gave the Blazers fans something to cheer about.
Blazers netminder Dylan Ernst – who was named third star – made 27 saves on 30 shots.
The Oil Kings’ Ty Nash, son of former Blazer Tyson Nash, had assists on both of Sawchyn’s goals.
With their third loss in a row, the Blazers drop to 9-23-3-2 on the season, which leaves them in last place in the WHL standings with 23 points from 37 games. The Oil Kings improve to 13-20-1-1, though they’re last in the Eastern Conference.
The Blazers will play just one game this weekend, on Friday night, when the host the Calgary Hitmen at Sandman Centre Friday in a 7 p.m. puck drop.
They’ll also host the Everett Silvertips next Friday, Jan. 12, before playing the next six games on the road.
