Kamloops RCMP say they’re investigating a sudden death after human remains were found at the scene of a fire under the Red Bridge.
Mounties say the fire at what was believed to be a transient camp on the banks of the South Thompson River was put out by Kamloops Fire and Rescue around 10 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20.
They say a worker who was cleaning up at the scene – near the 600-block of Lorne Street – around 1:40 p.m. yesterday, Jan. 23, called police after they discovered the remains among the debris.
“Today, Wednesday Jan. 24, the BC Coroners Service attended the scene and confirmed the remains to be human,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Corporal Crystal Evelyn said.
A police presence remains in the area as RCMP and KFR continue to investigate the incident and identify the victim.
Evelyn says they’re being supported by the RCMP’s Forensic Identification Services Unit, an RCMP fire investigator, the Serious Crime Unit, and General Investigations Support Team.
The BC Coroners Service is also conducting a concurrent investigation.
People with information about the incident are being told to contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2024-2290.
