The Kamloops-based Corryn Brown rink will participate at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Calgary next month as one of four wildcard teams.
The foursome of Corryn Brown, Erin Pincott, Jenn Armstrong, and Sam Fisher along with their coach Jim Cotter were added to the 18-team event Monday as one of the highest placed teams in the 2023-24 CTRS standings who did not win their provincial or territorial championship.
Team Brown lost the B.C. final to the Clancy Grandy rink for the second consecutive season on Sunday.
“Obviously not the way we drew up it as its always an honour to represent your province by winning but we’re really grateful that the hard work that we put in to this season and the consistency that we had throughout the season paid off and earned us a spot at the Scotties this year,” Brown told NL Sports.
“We got our spot based on points so in all essence of the word, we are a team wildcard but we are still underneath the B.C. umbrella and we’re really proud to have that on our backs.”
Team Brown will kick things off on Friday, Feb. 16 against Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville in Pool A action.
They will also face Kerri Einarson’s Team Canada rink, Manitoba’s Kaitlyn Lawes, Alberta’s Selena Sturmay (which features former Team Brown member Dezaray Hawes), Saskatchewan’s Skylar Ackerman, Quebec’s Laurie St-Georges, PEI’s Jane DiCarlo, and Newfoundland & Labrador’s Stacie Curtis in the round-robin stage.
This will be Brown’s third appearance at the Scotties. They made their debut in 2020 after winning the BC Scotties and repeated in 2021 after COVID-19 led to the cancellation of that year’s BC Scotties.
“We’re just going to take advantage of the opportunity and not take it lightly because we know it doesn’t come around every year,” Brown said.
Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson – who won the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Kamloops – is looking to win a record fifth consecutive national title.
The top three teams in each pool will move on to the playoffs.
The first-place team from Pool A will place the second place team in Pool B and vice versa in the first round of playoffs. The winners will move on to the Page playoff 1-2 game, while the losers will meet the third-place finishers in an elimination game, with the winners moving on to the Page playoff 3-4 game.
The 2024 Scotties final will take place at 6 p.m. MDT on Sunday, Feb 25.
The winner will represent Canada at the 2024 World Women’s Curling Championship which is being held in Sydney, N.S., between March 16 and 24.
