Environment Canada has issued special weather statements on a number of highways in the BC Interior, warning drivers to prepare to a significant amount of snow this weekend.
The statement covers the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt, and on the Trans Canada between Sicamous and Golden, Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton and from Grand Forks to Creston, as well as on Highway 16 from Tete Jaune Cache to the Alberta border.
The weather agency says a large low pressure system will bring snow to mountain passes starting Saturday, with the snow expected to intensify on Sunday, before tapering off on Monday.
“As the low intensifies on Sunday, snowfall accumulation will rapidly increase across the highway passes,” Environment Canada said. “Snow levels will also lower to near valley bottom in the wake of the cold front associated with this low. Local blowing snow is possible in wind-prone areas.”
“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.”
It is asking people to check DriveBC for the latest road conditions, and to avoid travelling if its not necessary, as there could be “hazardous” driving conditions as a result of the snow.
