Kamloops native Logan Stankoven has been named the American Hockey League’s Most Outstanding Rookie for 2023-24 season.
The former Blazers captain is the latest winner of the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award, which is voted on by players, coaches, and media throughout the AHL.
It’s the latest accolade for the 21-year-old Stankoven, who was named to the AHL’s All-Rookie Team as well as the AHL’s First All-Star Team in his first season of professional hockey.
A second-round pick of the Dallas Stars in the 2021 NHL Draft, Stankoven was leading the entire AHL in scoring with 57 points (24 goals and 33 assists) in 47 games when he was called up to the NHL in late February.
While he dropped in the overall scoring race, Stankoven still led all AHL rookies in scoring this season, and was third in goals and tied for third in assists among rookies.
Since making his NHL debut in Carolina, Stankoven has 14 points (six goals and eight assists) in 24 NHL games. He also scored his first Stanley Cup Playoff point, an assist in Game One against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Stankoven is the third Texas Star to win the most outstanding rookie award in the team’s 15 years in the AHL, joining Curtis McKenzie in 2013-14 and Riley Damiani in 2020-21.
He’s also the third Blazer to win the award joining Darcy Tucker in 1996 and Corey Hirsch in 1993.
