The BC Government plans to demolish a number of its buildings at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Columbia Street in downtown Kamloops.
Work to demolish the buildings at 515 and 527 Columbia Street is expected to begin around June 25 and be done by September 25, according to an Invitation to Tender issued Monday.
“The site comprises one lot with three government buildings and a fourth building that straddles the southern property line,” the document said.
“It has been owned by the provincial government since 1959. The Site is currently designated Educational/Institutional and lies within the Government Precinct as outlined in the Official Community Plan (OCP).”
It is not clear what type of housing will rise at the 3.9 acre lot, but BC Housing put out a call for demolition contractors on Monday.
That property in the area known as the Columbia Precinct has long been identified by the City of Kamloops as a potential redevelopment site for “all types of housing.”
Tyler Baker, BC Housing’s Director of Development for the Interior region, told City Council in January that his organization is aware that the Columbia Precinct is “a site of opportunity.”
“We’re aware of the motions that have come forward from council of that site, and communications with the ministry on the opportunities there,” Baker said.
The deadline for applications is May 21.
