BC United has tapped Mike Grenier to be its candidate in the Cariboo-Chilcotin riding in this fall’s provincial election.
Grenier, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s Area J director, replaces Lorne Doerkson who crossed over the BC Conservatives last month.
“Michael Grenier is exactly the kind of dedicated, entrepreneurial leader we need in Cariboo-Chilcotin,” BC United Leader Kevin Falcon said, in a statement.
“His dedication to the region is clear, and with his background in business and giving back to the area, I know that he will be the strong common sense voice that the residents of Cariboo-Chilcotin expect.”
Grenier, the founder and original developer of Tobiano, previously sought the federal Conservative nomination, which was eventually won by current Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP, Frank Caputo.
He also unsuccessfully sought the BC Liberal nomination for Kamloops-North Thompson in 2017, losing out to current MLA Peter Milobar.
The Cherry Creek resident has served on various boards, including the TNRD Film Commission and Kamloops Airport Advisory Board.
“I am committed to enhancing the rural, urban, and recreational lifestyle experiences for all residents and visitors,” Grenier said, in a statement.
“My vision includes fostering economic growth, improving local amenities, and ensuring a high quality of life for everyone in our community. I look forward to earning the trust and support of voters, with common sense policies and the work ethic the people of Cariboo-Chilcotin expect.”
Grenier and Doerkson will be running against the NDP’s Michael Moses. The BC Green Party has not yet named a candidate in Cariboo-Chilcotin.
Communities to west of Kamloops – like Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Cherry Creek, Tobiano, and Savona – were moved to the Cariboo-Chilcotin riding as part of a significant shift to provincial electoral boundaries.
Those changes will officially come into effect when the writ is dropped on Sept. 21.
