We’re getting a bit better of an idea of just how much damage was done in Savona during a June 30th storm which flooded out a good portion of the community.
Thompson Nicola Regional District CAO Scott Hildebrand provided an update to the TNRD Board on Thursday.
“Estimated over 50 properties were impacted. Mostly damage to landscaping and debris in yards. Provincial assessment indicates that rain was falling at 100 millimeters per hour. Considered a one-in-10-year event.”
He says the recovery efforts are progressing well, with everyone now able to move back into their homes.
“Some properties with interior damage. At least 10 properties with damaged basements. No properties deemed uninhabitable,” noted Hildebrand. “City of Kamloops ESS teams supported three households who required temporary accommodations during the event. The province EMCR, Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, did support TNRD to make repairs to our infrastructure.”
The province has opened up its Disaster Financial Assistance program for Savona, meaning affected homeowners whose insurance won’t cover their losses can now apply for up to $400 thousand in repairs.
Hildebrand says the community will be the first test of the province’s new online DFA application portal.
