Kamloops Fire Rescue is now working to determine the cause of a significant fire in the Kamloops United Church.
KFR crews were dispatched to its location at 4th and St. Paul at around 9:45am on Tuesday morning.
Jeff Pont, Life Safety Educator with Kamloops Fire Rescue, says the building — including the attached daycare — was occupied at the time.
“I think its worth mentioning that when you hear a fire alarm, make sure you exit the building. Don’t expect that it’s not a real fire alarm. Our crews did a great job getting everyone out. No injuries to report,” said Pont.
Assistant Fire Chief Scott Johnson tells Radio NL it appears the fire was accidental.
“Leaning more toward the electrical cause for now. It defiantly started inside the building. But the actual cause is still undetermined at this time,” said Johnson.
Its proximity to an apartment block to the east forced residents in that building to evacuate.
On top of being a church, the facility also houses a daycare, a thrift shop, and is widely used by community groups for various functions.
It’s unclear at this time when services or other events at the United Church will be able to take place.
