A one-stop-shopping type facility is being envisioned in Lytton for local community services.
An application from the Village has gone to Ottawa to create a “community hub.”
“Including spaces for things like a museum, visitor center and potentially [a] library. Those kinds of things,” said Mayor Denise O’Connor.
O’Connor says they have applied to free up some of the $64 million the federal government has promised Lytton for its rebuild.
She says the project will have to meet certain standards.
“Their criteria is that the spaces are inclusive, so they’re open to the public, they’re open to everybody,” said O’Connor. “Also that they’re built to be net-zero fire resilient.”
O’Connor suggests that while they do have some ideas of what the “hub” would include, she says it will ultimately be up to the residents themselves to decide.
“Once we hear that the funding has been approved for us, then we’re going to take it to [the] community for consultation, to say, ok, what exactly is it that we’re going to be rebuilding, and what exactly do we need. What is it going to look like,” she said.
O’Connor says they do want to keep the financial footprint of the hub somewhat moderate, noting the Village will have to operate it long-term.
She says they hope to hear back from the federal government on their application sometime this fall.
