The Village of Chase is looking at a high-tech option to try to reduce the likelihood of destructive wildfire near the community.
Chase is looking over a proposal from Vancouver-based SenseNet to install A-I sensors in the forested area south of the community.
The sensors are able to detect a fire in its early stages.
At a cost of $30,000 to install, and $30,000 a year to operate, Chief Administrative Officer Joni Heinrich says they’re hoping there might be an appetite from their neighbors to carry some of the costs.
“We’re just looking to try and find out whether, maybe, the local Indigenous community would be interested in partnering with us,” said Heinrich. “We’re going to be reaching out to the Neskonlith Indian Band, which… one of their main community areas is very close to the area of concern.”
Chase is considering installing 20 sensors in the area.
SenseNet A-I sensors have been installed around the Predator Ridge golf course, following a two year trial by Vernon’s fire department.
