UPDATE 10 p.m. – Highway 5 north of Kamloops has reopened in both directions, almost a full day after it was closed because of a crash.
The full reopening comes about three hours after a partial reopening that saw lane closures in both directions.
ORIGINAL – Highway 5 remains closed in both directions north of Rayleigh as clean up continues after a Saturday night crash caused a fuel spill near the Tournament Capital Ranch.
According to Drive BC, the single-vehicle crash happened between Old Hwy 5 and Palmer-Forsyth Road some time before 11 p.m., Sept. 14.
Mounties say a trailer on a tanker truck began leaking fuel after it flipped over, though its not clear what caused the crash. It’s also not clear how much fuel was spilled and how widespread the damage is.
No injuries were reported, but the highway remains closed north of Kamloops to allow crews to crews to clean up the spill.
“We request the public’s patience while crews clean up fuel and remove the vehicle from the highway,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brett Urano said.
“We are continuing to investigate with our partners to determine the cause of the incident.”
DriveBC says a detour is available via highways 1, 97, and 24. There have also been reports of long lineups as people wait to use the McLure ferry to get around the crash site.
As of publishing, the next update from DriveBC is expected around 3 p.m. Sunday.
