UPDATE 1:30 p.m. – The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says the Red Bridge in Kamloops will be closed to vehicles until further notice after a fire early this morning.
A statement from the Ministry says the fire on the southern support beams of the bridge spread to one of the north piles before it was extinguished.
It’s not clear how significant the damage is, but the Ministry says a structural assessment of the Red Bridge is underway, with more information to come once that process is completed.
RCMP say officers from both the Kamloops and Tk’emlúps Rural detachment were called around 6:45 this morning, Sept. 17, to assist Kamloops Fire and Rescue with traffic control after the fire.
The bridge was reopened to pedestrian traffic around 11 a.m., though there is no indication when vehicles will be allowed back on. People hoping to drive to or from the Mount Paul Industrial Park have to detour via the highway.
At this time, its not clear what caused that fire though Mounties say more information will be provided when available.
The next update from DriveBC is expected at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
