A tight BC election race in Kelowna, which did appear to have the potential to tip the balance of power to the NDP, is not expected to come through for David Eby and the Party.
Elections BC in a late Sunday afternoon update has confirmed BC Conservative candidate holding Kelowna Centre.
Loewen controls the newly-formed riding over New Democrat candidate Loyal Wooldridge by 68 votes after a recount was conducted due to an earlier vote counting miscalculation.
With a total of 25, 521 votes tallied, the 68 vote difference still falls well within the 1/500th margin laid out in the Election Act for a mandatory recount, suggesting another recount could be coming for that riding.
The results in Kelowna come as the province awaits results of an even tighter race in Surrey-Guildford.
The last update from the Surrey riding on Saturday shows BC Conservative candidate Honveer Singh Randhawa holding a razor-thin, 12 vote lead over NDP incumbent Gary Begg.
The vote counting this weekend did mostly favor NDP candidates, which needs to flip just one electoral district to install a majority government when the new session opens, once the MLA-elects are sworn in.
A date for a swearing-in does remain somewhat uncertain, as the narrow races in both Surrey-Guildford and Kelowna Centre could be enough to convince the BC Supreme Court to take up any petition for a judicial review from either of the losing parties.
With the Kelowna Centre holding for the BC Conservatives, the seat count has not yet moved, 46 for the NDP and 45 seats for the BC Conservatives.
Forty-seven is the magic number to achieve a majority government.
As it stands, the two BC Green MLA-elects would hold the balance of power in a minority government scenario.
Final election results are due Monday.
