A “special meeting” has been called for Tuesday afternoon by Kamloops City Council.
Not a lot of details are being released around the nature of the meeting, as the agenda includes just two items.
One of the items involves the role of Deputy Mayor for December.
The other agenda item includes an “Address of Councillor Bill Sarai.”
Sources tell Radio NL Sarai may be “stepping back” connected to the role of Deputy Mayor, a position he holds for December as part of the regular rotation council members go through each month.
The role of Deputy Mayor has become much more prominent since the Mayor was stripped of his abilities to speak on behalf of the City by council, with the Deputy Mayor taking over as official spokesperson each month.
While a self-styled city hall watchdog group calling itself Kamloops Citizens United has launched a new campaign calling for Sarai to resign, sources also tell Radio NL this will not be the case.
Sarai is being targeted through a change.org petition over a recording he made of a meeting between himself and Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson in early 2023, a few months into the current term of council.
Earlier this year, Sarai sent a portion of that recording to the Mayor without letting Hamer-Jackson know that it was himself who recorded it.
This prompted the Mayor to ask the RCMP to investigate, suggesting his office may have been bugged, as the recording in question included just the Mayor and Bill Sarai, who Hamer-Jackson says told him the recording was “forwarded” by someone to the councillor.
This eventually led to Sarai making a full disclosure of the recording to the Mounties, prompting the RCMP to close the investigation, as it is legal to record someone in Canada without their knowledge.
However, a copy of the full recording has since become public.
It was that heated discussion which became the catalyst for a number of Kamloops City Staff members to file complaints against the Mayor, leading to the so-called Honcharuk Report from the Integrity Group.
