An early Christmas gift for a young man hoping to take his hockey career to the next level.
The Kamloops Blazers have called up 16 year old Madux Kabrud from the U-18 Saskatoon Blazers of the Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) for this weekend’s three-game stretch in Alberta.
Kabrud is expected to back up Logan Edmonstone, after Dylan Ernst failed to make the trip across the Rockies due to illness.
Ernst also missed his scheduled start in Prince George on December 7th, last Saturday.
The 16 year old Kabrud has been splitting ice time so far this season in Saskatoon, sporting a .903 save percentage and a 3.40 goals against over 11 starts with the U-18 Blazers.
Last season as a 15 year old, Kabrud went 20-2 in the games he started for Saskatoon, turning in a 2.81 GAA and a .909 save percentage.
Kamloops took him in the 9th round, #196 overall, in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.
The Blazers signed him to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement this September, after a solid performance in the pre-season, but re-assigned him to his SMAAAHL team as Kamloops decided to go with the Ernst/Edmonstone tandem.
It’s unclear yet if Kabrud will see any game time with the Kamloops Blazers, but will be with the team as they begin their trip in Alberta tonight in Calgary against the Hitmen.
Pre-game with Jon Keen gets underway at 5:30pm, with the puck drop from the Saddledome at 6pm.
From there, the Blazers make stops in Red Deer on Saturday, then close out their trip on Sunday in Edmonton — putting the Blazers into the Christmas break.
Kamloops comes into the final three games before the holiday sitting in 9th in the Western Conference.
