If you think you may have left your pipe bomb on the along the North Thompson River, Kamloops RCMP would love to hear from you.
Mounties say they were called out to the beach along Shubert Drive at Richmond Avenue just before 1:30 on the Wednesday afternoon for what was being described as a ‘suspicious item’ laying in the sand.
“Based on the appearance of the item, officers believed it was a very small pipe bomb, which was later confirmed,” said Corporal Crystal Evelyn, Kamloops RCMP Detachment spokesperson. “Police immediately protected the area from public access until the EDU could attend and safely dispose of the item later that day.”
The Mounties have not explained where or how Explosive Device Unit was able to deal with the pipe bomb.
Often times, out of concern for the safety of the technicians, the bombs are blown up at the site they’re initially found on.
RCMP have not said whether they believe the device was intentionally left there, or if someone dropped it on the beach by accident.
It’s also not clear how much explosive power may have been involved.
That location along the North Thompson is popular among locals and dog walkers, which also has the Rivers Trail system run next to it.
Various homeless encampments are known to be set up in the area as well.
RCMP have not said whether they have any suspects in mind.
