Work to establish a new temporary shelter on the north shore of Kamloops seems to have been held up.
BC Housing says says the project at 142 Tranquille Road is now “expected to open in late January.”
In an emailed statement to Radio NL, BC Housing said it is continuing to complete the necessary renovations. “The Province, through BC Housing, is working closely with communities across B.C., like Kamloops, to address the complex challenges people face, including connecting people experiencing homelessness with the treatment, housing and supports that provide a pathway to live full, healthy lives.”
The project at the former Butler Auto & RV site will add 44-shelter beds to the city.
“Before any renovation work could begin, the shelter required a Temporary Use Permit (TUP) from the City of Kamloops, which was approved by city council on Nov. 26, 2024. Following this, BC Housing began renovations to convert the former commercial space into a habitable and welcoming shelter.”
The renovations include:
- adding amenity spaces, laundry and storage
- designing and installing controlled access;
- installing additional lighting and security cameras; and
- completing fire life system enhancements.
“Once complete, the 44 spaces at 142 Tranquille Rd. will add to the more than 200 shelter spaces already available in Kamloops. This shelter will be operated by ASK Wellness.”
