Northbound travel on the Coquihalla has been fully restored, after a disturbing incident where one person was killed.
RCMP have confirmed a man walking on the northbound section of the Highway around 9 kilometers south of Merritt, a couple of kilometers north of Kane Valley Road, when they were hit by an oncoming vehicle.
BC Ambulance reports being called out at shortly after 5am and attempted to try to revive the person.
However, RCMP say the person was pronounced dead when they arrived.
Mounties say the driver of the vehicle had no chance to avoid the collision and no criminality is suspected.
What’s not clear is the circumstances that led to the person walking on the Coquihalla to begin with.
An identity of the victim, including whether he was local or not, has not been revealed.
Merritt RCMP is asking anyone who may have information connected to the incident to come forward.
The RCMP, along with the Coroner’s Service, are running separate but coordinating investigations.
The Coquihalla was closed in both directions for a couple of hours, while the northbound lanes were shut down for roughly 6 hours before authorities were able to reopen it to traffic.
