One of the board trustees with the Kamloops Thompson School District is planning to bring foward a motion to attempt to save some money and possibly some jobs.
Trustee Jo Kang says he is has an idea that he think could make a difference. “So the public meeting on April 28 I am putting a motion forward that the Board of Education of School District 73, Kamloops-Thompson, immediately suspend all monthly trustee stipends and the annual technology allowance for the remainder of the 22024/25 budget year, with a suspension to remain in effect through the 2025/26 school year budget year.”
“Our stipend, or monthly salary, does go throughout the summer as well. So I’m proposing that we put a stall on this, not just throughout the summer, but also the 2025/26 school year. Just to at least acknowledge that everyone is getting affected by this. We all want to put our part in to helping the school district. And if this is a right step, then that needs to be at least discussed at the board table.”
There is a chance for public consultation on the budget until the 21st, and Kang wanted to make sure people had a chance to hear his thoughts while that process is ongoing.
” The last couple days have been pretty hard for me. I have just been thinking how can we make it better for our residents and students and teachers and staff and parents. And I think this is just a step that needs to be at least talked about.”
