Two Kamloops Blazers have been named to the CHL First All-Star Team for the 2022-23 season.
Blazers captain Logan Stankoven, the 2021-22 CHL Player of the Year, and Olen Zellweger, the two-time WHL Defenceman of the Year, were among the players recognized by the Canadian Hockey League Thursday.
Stankoven is coming off a 97-point regular season where he averaged 2.02 points-per-game. The Dallas Stars prospect scored 34 goals and added 63 assists in 48 regular season games.
The 20-year-old Kamloops native also led all WHL skaters in playoff points for the second consecutive season, and is currently leading the Memorial Cup scoring race with eight points in three games.
Last month, Stankoven was named the WHL Humanitarian of the Year for the 2022-23 season. He’s up for the CHL Humanitarian of the Year Award this Saturday, going up against Cam Squires of the Cape Breton Eagles and Dalyn Wakely of the North Bay Battalion.
He was hoping to become the first player to win back-to-back WHL Player of the Year awards in over 30 years, but lost out to eventual winner, Regina Pats forward Connor Bedard.
Zellweger, who joined the Blazers in a blockbuster trade with Everett in January, was second among WHL defenceman in scoring with 80 points in 55 regular season games.
The Anaheim Ducks prospect led all WHL defenceman in goals this season with 32 – 22 of which were as a Blazer – making him the first blueliner to hit the 30 goal mark in six seasons. He was tied for second place in WHL playoff scoring this season with 29 points in 14 games, one behind Stankoven’s 30.
The 19-year-old is up against fellow Ducks prospects Pavel Mintyukov of the Ottawa 67’s, and Tristen Luneau of the Gatineau Olympiques for the CHL Defenceman of the Year Award.
Bedard and Halifax Mooseheads forward Jordan Dumais, who are both nominated for the 2022-23 CHL Player of the Year Award, Barrie Colts defenceman Brandt Clarke, and Seattle Thunderbirds netminder Thomas Milic, who is nominated for the CHL Goaltender of the Year Award, round out the First All-Star Team.
It is the first time in more than a decade that the CHL has unveiled a First, Second, and Third All-Star team along with an All-Rookie Team. Players were last named to First, Second, and All-Rookie teams at the end of the 2009-10 season while Third All-Star team recipients were last named in 2002-03.
