The BC Wildfire Service says its been able to make good headway on a number of fires which have popped up in the Kamloops area over the past day or so.
Taylor Wallace, Fire Information Officer with the Kamloops Fire Center, says a fire behind Mount Peter just north of Kamloops has grown to over 70 hectares, up from the 10 being reported on Wednesday.
However, she says the fire is really only growing in one area at the moment.
“The fire is mostly burning Rank 2 in that northwest corner, but it is fairly quiet on the rest of the fire there,” said Wallace. “Crews are having good success.”
A fire burning to the northwest of that fire, closer to Sun Peaks, is also being held at 1.5-hectares.
A spot fire which was discovered last night just northwest of Cache Creek — not far from Highway 97 — also hasn’t grown much.
Crews are still determining the cause of that blaze.
However, the Cache Creek and Ashcroft areas were hit by a significant thunderstorm on Wednesday.
The Wildfire Service is keeping tabs on potential new storm activity today, but is cautioning that we are expected to see hot and dry conditions by the time the weekend rolls around.
