The BC Wildfire Service says a wildfire burning in a remote area of Wells Gray Provincial Park has grown to over 134 square kilometres in size.
The Kostel Cone Fire continues to burn out of control, with the BC Wildfire Service saying it is using a modified response, meaning the fire is being monitored but not actioned.
“During a modified response, a wildfire is managed using a combination of techniques with the goal to minimize costs and damage while maximizing ecological benefits from the fire,” the BC Wildfire Service said.
“This response method is used when there is no immediate threat to values.”
The suspected lightning-caused fire and the nearly Pillpill Range Fire – which is now estimated to be 4.3 square kilometres in size – were both discovered on July 9.
“[The Kostel Cone] wildfire merged with the Majerus Lake wildfire on July 13,” the BC Wildfire Service said. “The growth observed on this fire on July 18 was towards the east and northeast.”
“This fire is not showing any growth towards the south or west and the southern flank is considered stable.”
BC Parks says the areas around Kostal Lake, PillPill Mountain, and all campsites and trails in the West Arm of Murtle Lake are closed to protect public safety.
“All campsites and facilities located west of campsite #12 (Birch Beach) will remain closed until further notice,” BC Parks said.
“BC Parks and BC Wildfire are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates as required.”
The Ovis Creek fire, located north of Azure Lake, is estimated to be two hectares as of the most recent update this morning, while the 13 square kilometre Murtle Lake Fire, which forced the closure of the Murtle Lake area for a week last month, is currently listed under control.
