Highway access through the Fraser Canyon has been restored, following a nearly two weeks closure due to the Kookipi Creek Wildfire.
The province says work removing dangerous trees and loose rocks from the bluffs above Highway 1 between Boston Bar and Lytton has been completed.
That section of the Trans-Canada closed on Thursday, August 17, due to the wildfire, which crossed the highway and the Fraser River.
Lengthy delays are still expected for drivers along this route, due to traffic being down to an alternating single lane through the Falls Creek –Jackass Mountain– highway reconstruction project, in addition to possible lane closures for fire-related repairs and maintenance.
Meanwhile, BC Wildfire Service Crews will still be operating in the area, as the Kookipi Creek wildfire is still active.
The BC Government warns this section of Highway 1 – through the Fraser Canyon – could close at anytime should conditions warrant, including the possibility of proactive closures during rainfall as the fire-damaged hillside may shed runoff and debris.
Highway 1 between Chase and Sorrento reopened on Friday, August 25, following a week-long closure due to the Bush Creek East wildfire.
