The Kamloops-Thompson School District says the two week long Safer School Streets Pilot outside Arthur Hatton Elementary was a success.
Superintendent Rhonda Nixon says the findings from the pilot, which wrapped up on Friday, will be studied by pediatrician Dr. Trent Smith and others.
“We’ll keep everybody very informed about the benefits and about what we learned from the survey, “Nixon told Radio NL. “And then we would open it up to our school principals alongside the City of Kamloops and say, ‘where might we do this? And how?’ I think we may learn about the impacts to.”
The pilot saw temporary vehicle restrictions on Schubert Drive and on Chestnut Avenue during pick up and drop off times at Arthur Hatton. It was meant to try and encourage people to walk or bike their kids to school.
“We really wanted to start small so we experience the full effect with one community and then see where would be the appetite elsewhere,” Nixon added. “We want to see how it goes but I’m not going to say that we have a set number of schools or a certain location or anything like that, because we don’t.”
“You do need people who are on board with the change,” Nixon added.
“Like we need the staff, we need the City staff, all of the people who are involved in this project need to be able to make that work at other sites. We just want to see how can this work and what are the pitfalls and then we’ll have a good idea of what the next locations could be.”
