Kamloops native Saywer Mynio has signed a three-year, NHL entry level contract with the Vancouver Canucks.
The 18-year-old Mynio was a third round pick of the Canucks, 89th overall, at the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.
“Sawyer has gained some valuable experience since we drafted him, taking part in our summer development camp, Penticton Young Stars Tournament and our Training Camp in Victoria,” Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin said.
“We have liked the way he has looked on the ice and our staff is looking forward to helping him improve his game and skillset in the years to come.”
Mynio, a six-foot-one defenceman put up 31 points (five goals and 26 assists) in 68 games with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the Western Hockey League last season. He has 42 points (nine goals and 33 goals) in 115 career WHL games, and is expected to be back in Seattle for the 2023/24 WHL season.
He also had four points (one goal and three assists) in 19 playoff games as the Thunderbirds won the WHL title, and finished second in the Memorial Cup in Kamloops.
“It’s amazing. It’s a great organization. I live to close to Vancouver so it’s pretty surreal to be here in this moment,” Mynio said after the draft. “They’re probably one of my top three teams that I had interest in. Obviously close to home, its amazing.”
