The Sun Peaks Plaza, an open space park located near the Sun Peaks Centre, has officially been opened to the public.
The Plaza features a natural concert amphitheatre, an inclusive and accessible children’s playground, picnic and rest area along with improved pedestrian walkways and short-term parking stalls.
It it located at the site of the old Sun Peaks tennis courts, though two new tennis courts and two pickleball courts were built near the proposed site for a new school.
“This Plaza will become an important people place in Sun Peaks where residents and tourist will gather, play and relax during visits to the village,” Mayor Al Raine said.
“We already have one of the best alpine villages anywhere and this project adds a new visitor attraction at Sun Peaks.”
The $1.65 million project was mostly paid for with a Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport grant of $898,241.
Tourism Sun Peaks also contributed $350,000 towards playground equipment. Individual donations amounted to $198,876 with $190,000 also coming from the Sun Peaks Municipality. Sun Peaks Rotary also chipped in $10,000 while Adaptive Sports Sun Peaks contributed $2,000.
Land for the park was donated by Sun Peaks Resort.
“Investments in tourism infrastructure projects like Sun Peaks Plaza are good for visitors, good for communities and good for the economy,” Tourism Minister Lana Popham said.
“The tourism investments we’ve made in regions throughout the province are creating a more vibrant British Columbia for everyone and the Sun Peaks Plaza is an incredible example of how spaces like this create welcoming, accessible, and fun experiences for residents and tourists.”
The new Plaza connects the Sun Peaks Centre and the nearby Shuswap Medicine trail with the Sun Peaks Village.
