Thompson Rivers University will honour men’s volleyball player Owyn McInnis on January 10th with a celebration of life at the Tournament Capital Centre.
McInnis, a Guelph, Ontario native, was killed in a multi-vehicle crash November 29, in the area of McGill Road and University Drive, near the TRU East Gate.
The celebration of life will get underway at 4 p.m. next Wednesday, with doors opening at 3:30 p.m.
“The campus and Kamloops community are invited to join us to help honour Owyn,” a post from the TRU WolfPack said. “This event is open to students, faculty, staff, alumni, as well as members of the extended TRU, volleyball and Kamloops communities whose lives have been touched by Owyn.”
TRU also says the Owyn McInnis Memorial Men’s Volleyball Athletic Award has been established with the help of $20,000 from two anonymous donors
The two other student athletes who were injured in the crash remain in hospital at this time.
Riley Brinnen who was taken to Vancouver General Hospital with a severe spinal cord injury is set to be released into the GF Strong Rehab Centre in Vancouver in the near future.
“I’ve been told I’ll be at GF Strong for [three to four months] but I’m hoping for less,” Brinnen said, in a Dec. 26 update on GoFundMe. “My parents, Chris, Karri, Ann, and Mark, will continue to be by my side as I go through rehab.”
Owen Waterhouse – who suffered severed brain trauma – remains in a medically induced coma at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.
“Owen has had several positive strides towards healing and equal amounts of setbacks,” a Dec. 23 update on GoFundMe said. “Although Kelley and Rick wish to discontinue accepting donations at this time, we ask that you all continue to hold Owen in your hearts and prayers.”
“At a time of year when so many wallets are strained due to all the extra costs that come along during the holiday season, not to mention the ever-climbing cost of living, to say we are incredibly grateful for the unbelievable generosity shown to the Waterhouse family is an understatement.”
An investigation into the crash is underway.
