Premier David Eby has appointed a new cabinet that has some big names in new roles.
Adrian Dix, who had been Minister of Health since 2017, is now serving as Minister for Energy and Climate Solutions and former Energy Minister Josie Osbourne takes over the health file.
Mike Farnworth has been moved out of the Public Safety portfolio he has held since 2017, and will now be B.C.’s transportation minister. Farnworth will also return to the role of house leader, one he held from 2017 to 2022. Garry Begg, who won his Surrey-Guildford seat by 22 votes, is B.C.’s new public safety minister.
Ravi Kahlon will remain on as housing minister and will have Municipal Affairs added to the portfolio.
Changes were inevitable after a significant amount of Eby’s previous cabinet team is not returning to Victoria. That includes five members who lost in October’s election and seven ministers who did not run again.
Eby says his team is ready to listen to British Columbians and deliver on the core challenges people are facing – a team that combines years of experience and fresh perspectives from outside of government.
“The things that concern your family around the kitchen table are be going to be the issues that concern our team around the Cabinet table. They will remain our focus those families hit hard by inflation and rising costs, our focus will be on controlling your costs, supporting you with the cost of everything from housing to car insurance and delivering a middle income tax cut to support you and your family in these challenging times.”
“I’m proud of this capable and experienced team. They will be laser focused on the priorities of British Columbians,” Premier David Eby said. “This group will help our team deliver on the challenges British Columbians want action on: affordability, a strong healthcare system, safe communities and a clean and growing economy.
New caucus chair Stephanie Higginson, MLA for Ladysmith-Oceanside, said: “I’m excited to be taking on this important role, supporting and empowering our team so we can all do our very best work to make life better for people in B.C.”
