Over 70 alpine trails will be open and all lifts will be turning, including the new West Bowl Express chairlift.
When the public gets to hit the slopes at Sun Peaks for the first time in the 2024/2025 ski season, most of the mountain will be accessible. It all starts as early as 8:30 in the morning on Saturday, November 23.
Things have really turned around in the last week or so,” says Director of Communications Christina Antoniak. “It’s white top to bottom. We’ve got a lot of snow coverage now. Our mid mountain base is about two and a half feet currently.”
The brand new West Bowl Express chairlift will also be making its debut on Saturday. For the first time ever, it will be carrying skiers and riders to a top elevation of 2,093 metres on Tod Mountain. “So it’s going online for the first time, grand opening. It opens at 930 so we’ll have a little bit of festivities happening up there, ribbon cutting, and we have a beautiful, customary bell that’s been given to us from Doppelmayr, who’s the lift manufacturer, and this is part of their tradition.”
“Every time they complete a chair lift, they hand over this gifted cast iron Bell. It’s beautiful, so we’ll have it mounted at the bottom of the chair lift, and all day Saturday, as our guests are skiing through, they can ring the bell before they go onto the chair lift. So there’s going to be a lot of excitement and just a really, really fun time on Saturday.”
With season opening conditions off to a strong start, the resort is giving eight lucky winners plus a guest the very first seats to ride the new $12 million West Bowl Express chairlift on its first official day of operations.
“The anticipation of opening the West Bowl Express chairlift and knowing guests will again be able to explore the West Bowl terrain with ease is something that we’ve been looking forward to for months,” says Aaron Macdonald, Chief Marketing Officer. “This new high speed detachable quad lift and improvements to the West Bowl zone, including new trails and terrain, has transformed this upper area of Tod Mountain. We thought what better way to celebrate than by giving a few lucky guests those coveted first chairs.”
Antoniak says between 8:30 and 10:00 Saturday morning it will be giving away cinnamon buns to people who are coming early. That’s just one a few opening day promotions. “We have Digger coming up from [Kamloops] because we’ve got a partnership with the Blazers. So digger is going to be there, roving around. And then in the afternoon, of course, we’ve got our Après and Ale annual event at Massie’s Bar and Grill. So everyone with a ticket or a season pass gets a complimentary beverage at that event.”
The Nordic trail network will also be open, with over 35kms of cross country trails groomed and track set. “We’re opening all of our Nordic trails this weekend as well,” says Antoniak. “So for cross country skiers out there, the full network in the valley is open. Everything’s been groomed and track set, so ready to go for Nordic skiers as well as downhillers, this weekend,
