A new wildfire has sprung up dangerously close to Merritt.

The BC Wildfire Service says it is battling a three hectare blaze within Merritt city limits.

The Wildfire Service says ground crews and airtankers are fighting the flames as is the local fire department.

Reports say highway 8 is closed near the fire scene.
