While the city has chosen to reject two different applications for legal cannabis stores, the mayor is noting the rules today may not be the rules of tomorrow.
Ken Christian says there is still another shoe to drop on the legal cannabis front when edibles are legalized later this year.
He believes that will alter the dynamic and with such a new industry, he thinks there will be a natural re-evaluation of the rules.
“I think the entire retail cannabis landscape will be reassessed once we have had a year or two under our belt,” Christian said. “I think right now we are probably a little over-served in terms of the number of stores but those entrepreneurs are likely waiting for the legalization of edible marijuana.”
That said Christian says the rules right now are the rules including the requirement for pot shops to be 100 metres away from schools and each other.
“If you’re going to be within 100 you’re not likely to have a very easy ride,” he noted. “When it was first brought to council, it was intended to be 150 metres, and council at the time reduced it.”
