A $21-million-dollar building permit has been approved for a housing project in downtown Kamloops.
The permit is for a six-storey apartment with 140 units, including a dozen subsidized senior units, which will be located at 444 St. Paul Street.
Building and engineering development manager Jason Dixon was asked if this is a significant project for the downtown.
“I think it is a big project. When we look at our statistics for the last couple years around development, I think we’ve seen a lot more of those types of projects. And it fits with that trend of sort of other housing types, not just single-family dwellings. I think we’re doing okay this year on those as sort of well-rounded numbers for all different housing types. It’s really just a continuation of providing different options for folks.”
The building will also have commercial space on the ground floor, and it’s expected to be finished by the fall of 2020.
Dixon points out that permit accounted for most of the construction value in Kamloops for July, which was just over $30.5 million. The value of building permits for 2019 is now at $178 million, well above the $158 million at this point in 2018’s record construction year.
